Discount Bicycles: Great Deals Are Out There!

by Daniel Wright

Bicycling is the most economical mode of transportation available. Bicycles require no fuel, very little maintenance, last for decades, don't pollute, can be ridden almost anywhere, provide healthy exercise, and don't require a license or insurance. The guidelines below for purchasing a used road bicycle are intended to help people who are seeking options for less expensive transportation.

Because bicycles last for decades with little maintenance, used road bicycles in good working order are widely available for very little money. Although new bicycles are usually sold with a warranty, by careful inspection, quality used bicycles can be purchased for less than the cost of a week's worth of groceries.

If you are looking for used road bicycles try a local bike shop. They will make sure that the discount bicycles they have are safe and ready to go. You can also go the private route by finding one for sale in the classified section of the newspaper or at a garage sale, as long as you have confidence in your own ability to assess the bike's condition.

Inspecting used road bicycles demands an evaluation of the main parts beginning with the frame. Dents and scratches are normal signs of use. On the other hand, a cracked or bent frame is a much more serious problem, and might signify the potential for structural failure. If the frame of the bicycle is unable to support the weight of the rider, or if the handlebars or brakes fail, the result could be an unfortunate accident.

The handlebars should fit snugly in the steering tube of the frame. If they wiggle it can be dangerous. Once you are satisfied as to the condition of the frame, handlebars and seat, check out the brakes. While standing next to the bike, push it forward a little and pull each brake lever separately to see how they work.

The front and rear brakes ought to seize securely enough so that the wheel comes to a total stop when applied full force. Test this while you are seated on the bicycle, but use caution so you don't inadvertently throw yourself off if you grab the brake too vehemently. Brake pads which show wear should be replaced.

The next thing to check is the drivetrain. Wiggle both the gear sets next to the pedals and the ones next to the rear axle. If there is side to side movement of either gears or pedals there are bearings that need to be replaced. Examine the chain for unusual damage. Also, check the shifting apparatus to ascertain whether or not each gear is engaging properly.

Lastly, the wheels and tires should be inspected. The wheels should be a round shape, not oval. When the spokes are grabbed they should be even and firmly seated. While looking straight down, spin the wheel. There should be little to no side-to-side motion if the wheel is good. Take the bike for a quick a ride if it passes inspection before making a final decision if it should be purchased.
